With the rise of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) drugs like Ozempic® or Wegovy®, many people are looking to regulate insulin, lower blood glucose levels, and have a greater feeling of fullness. However, many natural appetite controlling supplements on the market can provide effective benefits at far less cost.

Bodybuilding.com’s Signature Appetite Control supplement contains 400mcg Chromax® (a registered trademarked version of Chromium), 200mg of Ceylon Cinnamon Powder, 200mg of Garcinia Cambogia Extract, 200mg of Glucovantage® (a registered version of Dihydroberberine), 200mg of Gymnema Extract, and 200mg White Kidney Bean Extract to help support cravings and fat metabolism.

Ingredient Breakdown: Exploring the Key Benefits

Chromax is a branded form of chromium picolinate, which is a highly bioavailable version of the trace element chromium. Chromium is essential for metabolism and blood sugar levels.  Supplementing with chromium can regulate glucose levels and insulin sensitivity, as well as reduce cravings, support appetite control, and aid in healthy weight management. Studies have shown improvements of individuals with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes with chromium supplementation.[1]

Garcinia Cambogia Extract comes from the fruit rind of Garcinia cambogia tree. It contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA) which can help with appetite control and weight management by increasing serotonin and the feeling of satiety.[2-3] HCA can also inhibit the body from making fat from carbohydrates. Preliminary studies have shown its use to be effective in short-term weight loss.[4]

Cinnamon has been used in native medicine in South East Asia for its antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antioxidant, as well as blood glucose lowering properties. Cinnamon can help with blood sugar regulation by improving insulin sensitivity, reducing hunger and cravings by increasing feeling of satiety, and having mild thermogenic effects which can potentially boost metabolism and help with weight management. While scientific studies have had mixed results on the effects of cinnamon, most agree that cinnamon consistently improved fasting glucose levels. For example, a smaller study demonstrated that 28 individuals improved their cholesterol and blood pressure after three months of supplementation.[5-6]

Glucovantage® is a registered version of Dihydroberberine, which is an active metabolite of Berberine. Berberine is known for its ability to support healthier blood sugar levels while improving insulin sensitivity in the body. A meta-analysis of the scientific literature has shown Berberine supplement can improve obesity and diabetes by reducing triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and fasting glucose.[7] However, Berberine usually has a very low absorption rate, which is why Glucovantage can be a better choice with its longer-lasting effects andgreater bioavailability.

Gymnema Extract comes from the leaves of Gymnema sylvestre plant and is used in Ayurvedic medicine. Gymnema reduces the sensation of sweetness, making sugary foods less appetizing and therefore helping with cravings. While more studies need to be done, promising research has shown Gymnema supplementation has helped with body weight, body mass index, and low-density lipoprotein, as well as improving glycemic control and reducing lipid levels.[8-9]

White Kidney Bean Extract comes from the seeds of the Phaseolus vulgaris plant. It has been used in supplementation because it can block carbohydrate absorption by inhibiting alpha-amylase. While research is ongoing, preliminary studies are showing that supplementation can help with controlling appetite and weight management by limiting the absorption of carbohydrate calories.[10-11] By slowing down carbohydrate digestion, you can feel fuller, have less cravings, and eat less snacks between meals.
